Japanese beetles are coming. Let them be? No way! Getting rid of Japanese beetles will be music to your ears. The full-season dual lure contains two attractants, a highly efficient aromatic lure plus a female sex lure. The aromatic floral lure attracts both male and female beetles, while the sex lure emits the scent of the female beetle, attracting males in large numbers. This combination of lures will catch up to 5 times as many Japanese beetles as a floral lure alone. Say hello and goodbye to Japanese beetles and their grubs.

How to use Wilson BUG-X OUT Japanese Beetle Trap

Contents

  • 1 trap and hanger
  • 1 lure
  • 2 biodegradable bags
  • 2 yellow plastic vanes

 

Vane assembly

Step 1
Slide the 2 yellow plastic vanes together so that the centre cutouts touch.

Step 2
Rotate the vanes so that they lock into place and form an “X” shape.

Step 3
Attach the bag to the bottom of the vanes, lining up the 4 holes. Gently push the hooks in the vanes through the 4 holes in the biodegradable plastic bag. Be careful not to tear the bag.

Step 4
Remove the protective plastic film from the front of the Japanese Beetle Dual Lure package.

Step 5
Remove the release strip on the back of the bait.

Step 6
stick the bait onto the yellow vane of the trap.

Step 7
Attach hanger to two of the holes at the top of the vane.

 

Trap placement

Step 1
Set traps out before daily temperature reaches 21 oC (70 oF). Hang trap 1 to 2 m (3 to 6 ft) above the lawn and about 10 m (30 ft) downwind from foliage in your vegetable and flower garden or your favourite plants. You can place traps on oak and evergreen trees because Japanese beetles do not eat their leaves. Another alternative is to hang them from bird feeders.

Step 2
Empty the bag at least weekly or when full to keep drain holes cleared. To do so, put full bags into a pail of soapy water to drown live insects.

Step 3
Remove at the end of the season.

 

Tips

  • Placing traps should be timed to coincide with the emergence of adult Japanese beetles. Adults generally emerge between early June and late August.
  • Traps are most effective when many of them are spread out over an entire community.
  • Place dead beetles and bags in compost.
  • Once lure has been removed, bag and trap are fully biodegradable and compostable.

Warnings

  • Do not place traps near foliage, your gardens or your favourite plants.
  • Place traps at the borders of your property, away from the plants beetles may damage.

Lure
At the end of the infestation season, place lure in garbage. Do not reuse.

 

Bag/Vanes
Place in compost pile or wrap container in newspaper and discard in household garbage.

 

Box
Recycle empty container.

Store in a cool, dry location away from food and feed. Do not open lure until ready to use.

BUG-X OUT Japanese Beetle Trap has two powerful attractants that lure adult beetles to come and visit, only to find themselves trapped inside. Without this trap, these adult beetles will normally mate and lay their eggs in your lawn. Those eggs turn into lawn damaging grubs. Besides preventing adult beetles from eating your plants during their adult stage, this trap is an effective birth control, eliminating any chance of egg laying and future damaging lawn grubs.

Yes, it is perfectly safe for people and pets. We recommend placing the trap out of reach of children and pets so they don’t play with and liberate the trapped Japanese beetles.

Adult Japanese beetles emerge between June and early August. Set the trap for this timing. It will last the entire adult beetle season.

If adult Japanese beetles have emerged from your lawn and are in the area, they will be intrigued by the scents of the two attractants. Once they’re attracted to the trap they’ll fall into the bag and won’t be able to escape.

Under favorable conditions, a trap will capture about 75% of the beetles that approach it.

Japanese beetles are colourful , shiny, metallic-green, 1 cm (½ in) long insects that damage many plants. The adult beetles feed on over 400 plants, attacking flower buds and fruit. They prefer American linden, apple, maples, rose, cape myrtle, pin oak, birch and plum. The grubs also feed on a wide variety of plant roots including ornamental trees and shrubs, gardens and lawn grasses.
The grub stage lives underground 10 months of the year, hibernating during winter. In spring, they start to eat plant and grass roots. The grubs pupate in late spring, and adult beetles emerge late spring or early summer. Adult female beetles then destroy nearby plants.
Beetles eat, burrow into the ground, lay a few eggs and return to eat, repeating the cycle until 40 to 60 eggs have been laid. Grubs kill turf in irregular patches. If your lawn has brown or dead patches, dig up some of the turf to find the white, curled grubs.
