Yellowjackets

About yellowjackets

Yellowjackets are nuisances that may sting multiple times with very little provocation and they can sting multiple times. The aggressive pests build their nests from chewed wood fibers and saliva. They commonly build underground, but nests are also found under eaves, in hollow logs, or in walls or attics. A nest may house a few hundred yellowjackets, or several thousand.

Spraying a nest is tricky business, so prepare carefully before you begin.

  • Purchase two cans of aerosol wasp and hornet killer. The products allow you to spray the nest from a distance of at least 15 to 20 feet.
  • Treat the nest at night when the yellowjackets are less aggressive and most have returned to the nest.
  • Wear protective clothing, including hat, gloves, eye covering, close-toed shoes and shirt and pants that fit securely at the wrist, ankles and neck.
  • Plan an escape route in case you need to make a speedy exit. Make sure any obstacles have been cleared.
  • Once you’ve prepared, you’re ready to do battle. Spray a stream of wasp and hornet killer at the main opening of the nest and keep spraying for at least 10 seconds.
  • Once you’ve accomplished that, spray any other openings in the nest.
