How to get rid of ants in garden beds — A practical guide

Are ants in garden beds harmful to plants?
Most experienced gardeners will tell you that overall, ants aren’t a problem in the garden. In fact, they are vital partners in the ecosystem. They hunt pests, aerate the soil, pollinate plants and speed up the decomposition of dead organic material. In most of Canada, ants are active from May to September. What you see are worker ants either searching for new food for the colony or following a trail to a food source that was previously identified by a “scout” ant. They don’t normally damage the plants themselves.
